Finishing Your Contract.

When you leave Korea, there are a few things you need to do so hopefully this list will help you close up your time here.

Pension: You will receive all your money back from your pension fund. The money was withdrawn monthly and most likely your school matched and contributed to your pension. I have lived in Korea for two years, so my pension is roughly 4.0 million won. To receive your pension money back, visit a pension office near you. I live in Uijeongbu, so I will give directions from here. Just visit the office with your plane ticket home (it should be one way), your alien registration card, and passport. Make sure to have the bank account information you want the money deposited into. It takes exactly one month to receive this money into your account, and from what I'm told September is the best time for an international wire.
Directions: Go to Uijeongbu station, exit 2. Follow the sidewalk outside of the building as it curves around and then head west. Continue straight parallel to the road until you reach a crossroad. Cross the street and then turn left and cross the street again. The pension office is in the Samsung building about a minute walk from here on your left. I found the directions on the website a little confusing, so hopefully this helps!

Taxes: If you were one of the unlucky ones who didn't know to apply for an exemption when you first started working here, you need to get a residency certificate from your country. To get the residency certificate, visit this website for a Form 6166. You need to pay for the application, but it verifies you paid taxes in your native country. To speed up the process (it takes at least a month to process) I scanned my completed form and had my friend mail it in for me, and then my parents scanned the certificate and e-mailed it to me. From that point, my co-teacher went with my application and certificate to the tax office in Uijeongbu. I recommend getting the help of your co-teacher for this, because there is a lot of paperwork. Keep in mind that the tax year ends in March so please try to apply earlier than I did. I should receive my money back after I've left in two months.

Severance/Bonus pay: This is one month salary without any taxes or fees taken from it. It's the full month salary, so however much you get 1.8-2.8milish. You should receive this before you leave or on the last day of your contract. You will get this as a bonus if you resign your contract.

Apartment deposit: When you first came to Korea you were shorted 300,000W a month from your paycheck for this deposit, for a total of 900,000W. Your co-teacher will come to your house to make sure all appliances in your contract are in working condition. If you break a fan...*ahem* please be ready to replace it out of your own pocket or the deposit money. This is probably the second easiest part of everything you need to do.

Plane Ticket Refund: You should get this pretty quickly after your leave. I recommend talking your school into paying it, it's a lot simpler.

Closing your contracts:
Cellphone - I have an LG plan, and I was told that I must come into a retailer to have my account closed. What a bummer.

Internet: I have SK Broadband so I had my co-teacher and call to ask if they will close my account the day I leave, they said yes making life a lot easier.

Credit Card: Having a credit card in Korea was very useful, though at times it made it easier to spend money. I called my credit card company and closed it immediately.

Bank Account: I am leaving my bank account open due to the high interest rate.

Dr. Sung's Clinic for Women

Nice little view outside

Today, I visited the gynecologist in Hannam to pick up my health documentation from Dr. Sung's clinic. I highly recommend visiting the clinic. She only employs females, and the checkup is very quick. I went for the first time last week. My only complaint is that it really is quite expensive. Of course it's cheaper than the USA. You have a few different 'packages' to choose from. The more money you pay, the more STI's they check for. The basic package was 60,000W. I got a blood check for 5,000W, and a pelvic ultrasound for another 60,000W. I didn't wait very long, Dr. Sung poked and proded me for a few minutes and I was finished.

Directions: Go to Hannam Station, from the station walk directly out and turn right. Just keep going straight for about 10 minutes, across the BIG intersection. Once you cross the street, you will see a building. On the side of the building you will see a sign for Dr. Sung's clinic. Once you get inside the building, take the elevator to the 3rd floor. It's on the right. Don't bother taking a taxi here, it's a complete waste of money. Also, you should see some signs for Oksu station. Don't bother going there, it's far away!

Deviated Septum Surgery

Last year, I made a decision to get surgery in Korea. There were both perks and downsides to having surgery in Korea, though much more perks than downsides! I have always had breathing problems, ever since I was little. My nose is tiny, I have allergies too. I knew I had a deviated septum, because that's what my father had. I also knew it was going to be expensive, so I decided to try my hand here, in Korea. I briefly mentioned getting a doctor's opinion to my co-teacher who then whisked me away to a hospital near the school. I had originally wanted to get the surgery done in the future, a couple of months, but I soon found myself scheduling an appointment for a few days after I returned from my vacation to China. The doctor who could speak English, had x-rays of my nose, hmmed and hawed. After about an hour of explanation, he told me I had a deviated septum and was almost completely unable to breathe out of my left nostril. He told me the procedure involved cutting the cartiledge at the bottom and top of my nose and that it would straighten out. The procedure and hospital stay would cost me 500,000W. That's only a little less than $500 compared to the average cost of the surgery in the USA of around $4,000. I couldn't believe it. It was a no brainer, I had to get the surgery in Korea. The doctor informed me that he had never operated on a foreigner's nose. That my nose was small and angular compared to a Korean nose. He also said it most likely wouldn't be an issue, despite that.

I showed up for my surgery, stayed overnight in a hospital bed. Meals were Korean, I was not supplied with utencils so someone kindly enough lent me some. There was a convenience store available to me in the basement, but other than that I was on my own. The next morning was my surgery. I went under pretty quick. I remember trying to speak a little Korean and ask some questions, but I passed out. When I was returned to my bed, I was very nauseated for a few hours. I was in some pain, but it wasn't overwhelming. I had big cottonballs stuffed up my tiny nose to help with the leaking blood. I looked terrible, but that's surgery for you. I wanted ice cream and one of the other visitors kindly went downstairs and purchased a cone for me. The next day the cotton was removed from my nose and I was released from the hospital. It didn't take too long for my nose to finish healing, so overall I say job well done. My nose does not look any different from how it used to, and I can breathe. The best part is that my wallet was perfectly fine.

In conclusion, bring utencils, your wallet, and maybe a friend to help you out a little.

Dental Care

I've been in Korea for two years, and not once had I visited the dentist. I have this unjustified fear of the dentist, ever since getting my first filling in 2009. I have seen many metal mouths and as much as I rave about how wonderful the health care system is, I was afraid. Finally, I bit the bullet and visited the dentist. In Korea, everything is very close by. There are at least two hospitals within a block of me, a hair salon, eye ware store, convenience store, market, vet, fast food, numerous restaurants, and a few schools. I literally only have to walk across the street to reach the 'pyeongwong' 병원 hospital. The dentist was a few floors up, so I opted to take the stairs. I walked into the dentist office before asking for a cleaning. They actually call getting a check up and a cleaning 'slating'. It ran me only 60,000W, about $57. I waited to be seen for less than two minutes, and the cleaning itself was painless, no fillings necessary. Don't be afraid of the dentist, the health of your teeth is important. Keep it cute, Korea. :]

I just want to mention something fun for ya'all. I got a costume lately from this awesome shop in Gmarket called Sweet Holic. It wasn't expensive, about $22 dollars for a high quality animal suit that can be used as P.J.s or a skisuit (apparently people have tried this and it can be used as such). I've always had a thing for tigers. My year is the tiger and it's also my favorite animal (next to cat). They deliver worldwide and Gmarket can be used by anyone, you don't need to learn Korean. So go crazy! It's really cute ^^

Taxes!

My school is much less organized when it comes to money issues, at least from what I can tell. I've heard some horror stories. Lately, my monthly paycheck has been shorted. Two months ago, it was shorted for about $550, and this month it was shorted another $320. You have to be careful to check your account and make sure you're getting as much as you should be. A year ago Korea passed a tax law that taxes foreigners more money.
Not that it matters, you get all the money back after you finish your contract, but it's quite striking to be coming home from an expensive birthday and see might not have enough money to buy food the next month. It wasn't that bad, but it could have been. They took more tax money out of my paycheck to follow the new tax increase, I just wish I had had a warning somehow! Even yet, this month I was shorted for additional health expenses since I made more than average last year. Lame! Oh Korea...

Oh hai, didn't see you waiting there for a few months...Hello? -silence- -prods skeleton-. ^^ I've been SUPER busy lately. But I started blogging privately daily, so I'm going to try to pick up the pace with this here public blog.

My situation has changed since January. When I first started, I had two co-teachers. I taught 3rd and 5th with one of them, 4th and 6th with the other. I planned almost every lesson, my role in class was low to medium. I was learning, to give an excuse. After six months in January of 2010 I lost both of my co-teachers, one of which went on to be a homeroom teacher in 3rd grade and the other in 1st. The principal expects much out of English teachers, so nobody wanted to be one. This year my school hired an English conversationalist teacher as GEPIK increased the class load severely from 2 classes a week to 3. As a result, I have one teacher who teaches 4th and 5th with me, and the conversation teacher teaches 6th and 3rd. I'm fine with that, 6th graders are the most difficult to teach and the least interested. I also have a lesson plan from the previous year, so I really have much more free-time lately. So here's to posting more regularly...at least until August. Please ask me questions if you have any!

How to Use a Korean Toilet.

How to use a inground/in-the-floor Urinal, pictures MAYBE later.

1. Make sure to come armed with toiletry, overestimate in case of emergency.
2. Position facing rounded curvature of the urinal.
3. If you have weak thigh muscles, use your left or right hand to hold your balance on the stall wall behind you.
4. Squat eventually. I know that's difficult if you're proportioned like a woman due to the relative size of the urinal, but apparently these were designed for women with manly, curveless bodies.
5. Pee hard, like a race-horse. Think racey thoughts. The harder you pee, the less likely the pee flow will veer to the side and proceed to accumulate around your feet OUTSIDE the urinal. If you pee slowly, it will drip off your rump causing a very uncomfortable sensation and most likely NOT drip into the urinal due to your curvy woman parts.
6. Use your excess toiletry to clean the war zone.
7. Put your toilet paper in the adjacent trash basket.
8. Flush.
9. Wash your hands in COLD unheated water during mid-winter.
10. Rinse and repeat as necessary.

The Color Pink

This is a bit random, but as I was strolling the hall, I realized that there is a distinct lack of pink as of late in the wardrobe of boys. When I first got to Korea, I noted that adults and kids would freely wear pink regardless of gender, and from a homophobic country such as the USA, this was odd to me at first. Recently, I see less and less pink. At first I thought it was the season, but I began to wonder if maybe this is the influence of more 'concerned' native speaking teachers. I even hear the kids spouting the word 'gay' on occasion. Any thoughts?

Negatives to Korea, teaching ESL

I've done nothing but praise and praise Korea for being on the up and up. I love Korea most of the time. As of late, it's time for the school year to end and grades to be changed. Unfortunately, that means my sweet little fifth graders become the 'alpha students' of my school and begin to act like terrible little masses of energy. In the states, there is a very strict and stagnant program used for children who throw tantrums in the classroom or refuse to do work. In Korea, from my observations, there really isn't one. Corporal punishment was recently outlawed from Korean schools, and teachers aren't really able to cope with the loss of power in that way. There's no suspension, as kids have a 'right' to learn, and there's no detention that I'm aware of. So, I have a big problem when dealing with my students. I have already implemented a system where if they talk and don't listen, I begin to take their points for the day and they become farther away from a movie/game day. They need about 400 points for a movie or a game day.

When that doesn't work, they are required to clean the classroom. I've also tried having them write sentences of the lesson, and for every time they begin to talk more adding more sentences. But, that's starting to not work, as well. I gave them a pop test, in which four female wannabe kpop 6th graders (they're actually only 5th) and they all cheated. This infuriated me to no end, on top of a huge communication barrier between me and their home room teacher. Thus, I made them sit girl, boy, girl, boy. The class was quiet for a few minutes until they began to get loud again, so I made them do frog jumps in an attempt to de-energize them. That doesn't seem to work either. On top of everything else, one student was writing and passing notes in class and when the teacher tried to take it, the student got physical. I wanted to send her immediately to the principal, but apparently that's not what you do to terrible students. Instead, you take their bullcrap as you attempt to get the letter. This isn't the home-room teacher's fault, she's an elder women. I took charge and yanked the letter out of her hand, made her stand up. She then proceeded to throw a crying temper tantrum the remainder of the class and did nothing. I made her leave the room.

I'd like to know, how does your school handle this situation? I'd like to give them a break, since the school year is almost over and they're worrying about a final exam, but their behaviour is inexcusable. I really dislike 6th graders, as they rarely listen and seem to think they are the best since they are the oldest students. 3rd graders tend to be better at English and more eager to learn compared to a tight-lipped 6th grader.

Let's just say, I'll be ready to go home when my contracts up. I'm tired of everyone and their mother staring at me for being different.

Lantern Festival

If you have a chance, in November early October is the Lantern Festival. There are many places to sample Korean street food as well as sights to see. The wait to view the lanterns upclose wasn't terrible, even on the weekend. Things moved pretty quickly. The lanterns were lit up and unmoving, symbolic of hopes and dreams. It reminded me of my time in the States when they would blow up their own lanterns for Christmas. It was a tradition to see them every year :].

Cyclone Cyclone Go Away! Oh, wait...typhoon? Hurricane?

I'm a 'waygook' (foreigner) from Florida, so I'm quite used to the aspects of a heavy storm, loss of electricity or water, even heavy damage wrought by natural disasters

Any strong storm surge born in the Atlantic or eastern Pacific Ocean is called a hurricane, so everything I had experienced previously was a hurricane. Even worse, Florida is prone to hurricane attacks. So I would say I'm a connoseiur of Hurricanes! That being said, storm depressions that originate in the Western Pacific would be considered 'typhoons', so I have now experienced my first typhoon, Typhoon Kompasu. I live outside of Seoul, so the damage was minor and the amount of storm was disappointing to me. Hurricanes are an experience that one should have at least once. I've witnessed the stronger winds of typoons, but that's all I can note. It lasted very short. Combine this with Korean work ethic and you don't get a typhoon day, you get a three hour delay. So though there was a dangerous typhoon hanging over South Korea, I was still expected to work three hours later than normal.

Staying Another Year!

I'm here another year, so I've gone through the visa process necessary to legally stay. Here's what you need.

5. Fee of $30 for single entry, and $80 for multiple entry (in cash).

My office moved to Yanju, so I experimented a little and found the best route to the office is from Hoeryong is Bus 36 from exit 1. I'm heading home to the US in a couple days ^^

In Korea, often times there are things that are so normal to one person and completely flabberghasting to the next person. For instance, food is stored in many different ways from what I'm used to. The meats are stored in a plastic yellow container with a clear wrap over the top, that much hasn't changed. Eating chicken noodle soup out of a bag, with the whole bird intact, that's another experience. Most of all, when I'm sucking a ice cream/milk shake confection up from a plastic tube connected a small, freezer bag, I'm taken aback. That just does not happens. What ever came over eating pints with a spoon? Oh, you still can? But half pints cost around six to eight dollars? Blasphemy! They do have unique flavors readily available like red bean, green tea, blueberry, to name a few. Everything is half-sized, anyway. A can of Mountain Dew? Surely, this baby can can (hehe) satisfy the most hard-core Starcraft PCBanging prepubescent gamer? I think not. Hah, anyway, it makes sense Koreans are typically smaller than Americans. Americans are people who loathe wasting food. Worry not, my friends. Korea is onto something sweet! Quite literally. Oh, and, apparently no pretty stock figures so you get a grainy piece of coal picture of myself and my delicious lunch/breakfast/dinner. :D

The Sick Look - Stay in Fashion!

I may look kinda weird to you, with my facemask, but it's very normal in Asian countries. When you're sick, you still have to work (usually), it's the type of work ethic here. So as a result many people just wear facemasks.

What I don't get, however, is the style of eating combined with being sick at work and/or hanging out with friends. The style is to have many side dishes and one appetizer that everyone shares. I've been out when I was sick, and I was flabbergasted that I was told to share with them. It explains why people get sick easily, ontop of a densely populated area.

So yeah, when I go to the USA I'm totally wearing a facemask in public. It just makes sense when you're sick. It's not that fun to be four-eyed and wear one...foggy glasses!

Friendly Factor

Korean people tend to be very helpful and extremely thankful if you do something nice for them. I've had many instances where I was lost and they helped me find me way, or I didn't have enough money to pay for something and they let me come back later to pay it. Yeah, I get stared at a lot and that's a little hard to get used to, but people are usually only curious.

On the bus last Saturday after seeing NANTA (I'll talk about it in the next post) I noticed a girl who got on the bus and couldn't find her card and didn't have any money, so I gave her what little change I had to pay the bus driver with. The bus driver was nice enough to still allow her passage, even though she was a couple 100W short. I feel embarrassed when people are overly thankful when I help them. I help to make someone's life easier, not to receive thanks. Anyway, the girl was very kind in that she didn't bother me the whole bus ride and then gave me a little note telling me 'Thank you =]'.

Traveling outside of Korea

Korea is smackdab in the middle of Japan and China, hence one of the reasons a lot of foreigners want to work in Korea (myself included). With that in mind, how do they go about booking their international flights? They can use both agencies and discount sites such as Kayak.com or Expedia, even Korean websites. After intense research during Christmas of 2009, I came upon the conclusion that it was too difficult to find a price at a reasonable rate on my own and I pride myself on my research ability. I hit up Dave's ESL Cafe (this is a great resource for just about everything Korean) and contacted many different travel agencies. By far, SoHo Travel Agency soars above the rest. I knew a good price when I was quoted it, and I immediately latched onto their offer of a plane ticket from Incheon to Las Vegas for 952 USD during prime time flying season. I've used this agency two times since. They are flexible, quick, and very efficient when finding the best deal for your situation. When I booked my flight to China, they even handled the Visa process for me and the rest of the group going to Beijing. I always check other options, and SoHo has never let me down. Buddha's Birthday

South Korean religion closely ties in Buddhism and Christianity, both having deep roots in Korean culture. Christian chapels may be like ant hills throughout the city of Seoul but Buddhist temples are a beauty to behold. In this case, I visited Soyosan - Soyo Mountain at the end of Seoul Subway line 1. Buddha's birthday, May 21st, means free entrance privileges and lunch. Although, I would just as likely go during a normal day just to support and pay the meager amount of money they demand. The temple was set into the mountain, so it required a bit of hiking to reach my destination. I spied two waterfalls and was burned by the need to jump into the cool water and soak up the sun. North Korea - GUILTY

Statement: If South Korea does anything about the attack by North Korea, there will be all out war.

My response and educated opinion (please, join in the debate):

I believe that if something isn't done to bar North Korea somehow, they will continue to pull stunts like the torpedo terrorist attack. Hell, I believe they'll find any excuse possible to continue and justify the behavior of attacking South Korea. North Korea is the Democratic People of Korea (I say this loosely), and the propaganda against the Republic of Korea as well as the government that established it, is pretty slick. I highly doubt that ROK will respond with anything physical or warlike in nature. That is, not without the proper backup of the United Nations.

The issued statements against DP are not going to be followed with action, no matter how devastated ROK is by the death of the 46 young men. ROK just needs keep rejecting the talks of reopening the tourism trade of the Mount Kumgang resort near the DMZ and ignore DP's requests for Peace Talks (ROK refuses because DP continues to disregard the restrictions on nuclear weapon research). Mount Kumgang resort is obviously not safe, not since the death of an innocent woman who may have wandered into a military DP in the summer of 2008. read the article here. North Korea's guilt was established by a research team made up of minds from the US, Australia, Britain and Sweden; the conclusions were unanimous.

Turkey has declared its alliance with ROK outright, following the incident. The biggest impact depends on China's reaction and conclusion of the evidence provided of the attack, as China is the crutch holding up the DP economy. China and ROK fear a collapsed DP economy and bombardment of starving, desperate refugees. South Korea's best chance of success in this case would be to win the support of both China and the countries established within the 192 member States of United Nations.

I can only hope that this is settled peacefully in a way that both sides can be satisfied with but unfortunately there is always a losing party.

Conclusion: That statement is most likely correct, so let's hope that there is no physical retaliation. Instead there is something devised that is both dynamic and economically altering not consisting of brute force.

Busan Vacation - Children's Day

In Korea, they celebrate a holiday known as 'Children's Day' It's a national holiday of which students get the day off and relax from all their hard work. There is no such thing as mother or father's day, but there is such a thing as 'Parent's Day' celebrated quickly after Children's day. This was a new experience for me, and I'd been craving a small holiday and/or a place to visit in Korea outside of Seoul. I know what you're thinking...Vacation? What better place to go to than the beach? What a great place to be, located on a small Peninsula, when the desire strikes? I made my plans to head towards Busan with a large Itinerary and a desire to see the beach again. God, sometimes I really miss Florida beaches.

The trip was roughly 3 hours. I checked into my hotel, dropped my luggage, and headed out to explore. I got to see China Town and the 40 Step Cultural Area near Busan Tower. I met a friend at Seonmyeon Lotte Hotel for dinner and did some shopping in the underground and at the hotel department store which closed early that night.

There is a city bus tour for 10k W near Busan Station running until roughly 4pm that I took with a friend in Busan of downtown. I suggest taking the uptown tour as the downtown is more geared towards sales of jewelry and furniture. Yongdusan Park is a sight to see, in the middle of the park Busan Tower resides towering high over the quiet beauty of Busan. There are many places to shop and eat nearby when your stomach begins to turn from hunger.

Beomeosa Temple was also a great stop. The climb would have been much harder without my water bottle, so if you would like to go definitely bring some water. You get to the top by taking bus 90 for five-ten minutes and then walking another thirty-fourty minutes up the side of the mountain. There is a winding creek down the mountain side that I cooled my toes in, and many beautiful statues and places to pray to Buddha.

Next was Shinsegae park at Centum City Station. It is the largest mall in the world, though it's quite pricy it's a sight to be seen. Make sure to make your way up to Sky Park when the sun sets. It's a gorgerous scene not to be missed. I also visited Busan Museum of Art and Busan Aquarium, both which I recommend. The Aquarium is off of Haeundae beach and nearby is Busan Museum, so make a half day of it.

Tattoo Korea

Recently, I've noticed advertisements on Facebook for a Tattoo Parlor, Tattoo Korea with high tech supplies, skillsmen, and process straight from the USA. It seemed promising, and I've noticed there are advertisements on Facebook that actually do apply towards me and are useful. I've already got three tattoos, two I received in Florida while the first one I had done in Las Vegas for my 21st. My most recent was my biggest, and I wanted to add to my tattoo. After some conversation in e-mail, I scheduled an appointment for my consultation. It looked promising.

It was relatively easy to find Tattoo Korea, but as soon as I walked through the door I knew something was fishy. It was immediately assumed I would be getting my tattoo addition today, though I was just coming in to talk prices and see the environment. Josh never showed up for our meeting, strike one. There were many issues other than that, I will list them for convenience.

1. The artists were seen to be touching their hair, clothing, and items within the office with their gloved hands.

2. There were no separate rooms, everything was in one large room.

3. I was pushed very hard as soon as I walked through the door.

a. They wanted to schedule an appointment right away.

4. I waited 30 minutes for someone who didn't even show up.

a. I talked to an artist and they walked me through the paperwork (I figured if I decided not to do it, which was a good chance I wouldn't, I could call and cancel).

b. They demanded a deposit on a 250,000W tattoo. The main attraction of my previous tattoo was less expensive than that.

5. I did not see evidence of sterilization.

Upon realizing that this tattoo joint was a scam, I told them I would rather think about it and get back to them. They threatened that they would totally scrap my tattoo idea unless I made a deposit now. I simply stated that was too bad, unclipped my information that I'd filled out only to be told that paperwork was 'their' property and that I had to give it back to them. Let me clarify, it was a statement I was signing to declare I was disease free and knew of the consequences. It was a piece of paper with my personal information on it. So I told them I had a right to it, that they didn't need it since I was no longer receiving a tattoo at their parlor, folded it up and walked out.

So please, be careful to research the environment you receive your tattoo, make sure that the tattoo artist fits your needs, and you should NEVER be pushed into doing something that will alter your body for life that you aren't 100% sure of. My advice, either go to Japan or the USA and get a tattoo. If you have to get one in Korea, make sure you can communicate with the artists and that the parlors are clean and up to standard. You definitely don't want to take a life-threatening disease home with you, they're not cute like stray puppies.

I'm not sure exactly when yet, but Korean summer vacations are from Mid-July to Mid-August. It depends on when I have summer camp. Oh, and I'm staying another year so someone should throw me an awesome party!!! Yeah...I know that's not going to happen. I can dream though, huh?

30 Minutes of Glasses

I wired money overseas and then set up my account for Online bank transfers (after 8 months, I know I know..). Nearby, there was a store I had to look at and I purchased a really cute (and cheap) skirt for 7,000 won. As I was heading towards my home, I noticed there was a very large eye glass store. I'd heard rumours that purchasing glasses in Korea is affordable, so I ducked my head in and inquired about prices. I had my prescription checked, free of charge, and then I was able to view over 600 pairs of glasses. I had my current glasses cleaned, which were a whopping $230 frame and picked out a pair of shiny-purple frames which were only 30,000 won. Then I paid an additional 50,000 (by my choice) for scratch resistant and shine-proof for a total of 80,000 won. I didn't stop there, I'd also recent run out of contacts so I purchased a new pair that would last eight to ten months for another 50,000 won. My total was 130,000 won, and a total of thirty minutes of my time, without any type of insurance. They cut and fitted my glasses within minutes.

Shaved Ice

Koreans are well known for their low-calorie (as well as healthy) foods that they offer throughout the seasons. It's Spring, so they've begun reintroducing shaved ice, a far cry from what I'm used to. I tentatively ordered a caramel shaved ice dessert at a local cafe only to be pleasantly surprised by the flakiness of the shaved ice and delicate flavor that followed. Pieces of fruit were hidden within the mounds of ice, as well as caramel syrup and a flower-shaped rice cookie on top. My picture is far from adequate, so here's a stock image of what they do actually look like.

As most of us already know, there's a large language barrier that we consistently deal with. Some of us are blessed with coteachers who are there every class as a disciplinary and some of us (*ahem* me) are cursed with no coteachers. For those who us who aren't so blessed or those who are just plain interested, I'm going to submit to you words that you should never hear within your class. I know most teachers don't agree with it, but corporal punishment is permitted in Korea so deal appropriately (i.e. don't get out of hand - a smack on the head may suffice).

I apologize for the cursing, but as you know it cannot be helped.

Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival

Jinhae is a four hour train ride south, 40 miles from Busan. I traveled with about 50+ other foreigners of the Seoulites. The train ride was worth it, though, even though the time spent in Jinhae was a mere four hours. I was slightly disappointed, the Winter has stilled the process of Spring. Either way, there were some Cherry Blossoms and I finally know first hand why they are called such; the fragrant smell of cherries can't be missed. Decidedly, it's now my favorite flower.

The festival is right on the water, so don't miss visiting the turtle ship a few miles away from Jinhae train station. There are lots of cultural foods to indulge in while climbing up the stairs to Jinhae tower. Prepare a bottle of water, you'll need it.

G-Market is my addiction, I kid you not. I've purchased every type of product, only to have it at my door days later. It's like a complex mixture of Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Target, and a mall. The deals are so good I have to give myself a spending limit, little things add up quickly.

It is, by far, one of the best tools available to both the Korean people and foreigners residing in Korea. A Letter to Anonymous - Why Teach in Korea?

A year really flies by, it's over as soon as it begun. A year out of your life is nothing, and think of all the experiences you'll have and how cultured you'll be. You usually have around 20-25 paid vacation days (for a year!) and Japan or China are right around the corner. There's also Taiwain, Vietnam, Hong Kong, or the Philippines. So it's a good opportunity to see the world.

Culture:
The language barrier is hard, but a lot of Korean people were taught basic English and especially kids know English (if they're not embarrassed). You'll find you pick up the language quickly, assuming you don't know it already. One down note to Korea is that Asian people who can't speak fluently are looked down upon. It's like the US expecting Mexican to speak English when they can't.

Food:

The food is very healthy, though sometimes hard to get used to. If you get homesick there are fast food joints, American food (if not a little bit more expensive) or Itaewon (area in Seoul where a lot of foreigners go, so lots of English restaurants). It's pretty good, I can eat all my Kimchi now. Personally, I love samgyeopsal 삼겹살.

The Job:

As for school, the main part of coming to Korea (but it's a job ^^; let's go out and have fun) is really a great growing opportunity. The teaching system is a lot different, hiring a foreigner from another country to come teach is a good example of that. Depending on what grade level you teach, you can see the impact you make. Most people I know teach elementary or high school, but middle isn't that bad either. For the record, kids are like kids everywhere else in the world. Sure, Korean kids bow and are really sweet but they can be equal to a monstrous kid in the USA. I have a pretty heavy work load, but there are many resources available to me to make my life easier. You teach about 22 hours a week, 40 hours at work a week in total. Typically not Saturdays, but they do ask. I teach around 30 something hours a week, but that's not as tough as it sounds. I have a much more difficult time sitting idle and not having much to do but twiddle my thumbs. Sometimes you teach with all homeroom teachers, sometimes you have one or two co-teachers. You just have to make the best of your situation and utilize all the class material you can.

There are lots of amusement parks and attractions to see, cheaply or free. It takes very little cash to take a taxi, subway or bus to a location, some taxis even provide interpretations for any issues. The subway is a synch, no problem there. I'm told it's a heaven-send compared to Japan, and I know it's better than NYC because I've been there a few times.

Health:
Catching sicknesses easily is an issue, but going to the hospital is not. I can spend less than twenty minutes in the hospital and paid around $8.00 for a professional to see me (they usually speak English!) and fix me up. I even had surgery on my nose for a deviated septum, the surgical process is better than that in the USA and much cheaper. If you can believe it, I paid around 500,000 W (roughly $450.00) for the procedure and a three day hospital stay.

Overall, it's a good deal. Your board is paid for by the school, the money is better than in the army, there's lot of paid vacation time in which you can see the world and Korea, and you make a great impact on many lives including those outside of your school. Again, it's a year (or two, depending on what you decide) of your life. You'll have wonderful stories to tell your kids :].

Nami Island - Winter Sonata

Take your behind out of Seoul, for once, for a visit to a little island that's in the shape of a happy mouth ':D'. You can go any season you want. Visit during the Winter to experience the theatrical environment of the Korean Drama 'Winter Sonata', '겨울연가'. Or during the summer/spring when all the foliage is alive and vibrant. Winter Sonata was filmed in March of 2002, lending Nami Island it's popularity. Naminara Republic is a beautiful island, concerned with keeping the environment healthy by 'going green'. There were a few recycled sculptures, museums, and exhibits along with the picturesque scenery. I even had the opportunity to lock lips with a famous TV star ;].

Dr. Fish

A week or two ago, I went to a Cafe called 'Dr. Fish'. Now, why would a coffee shop be called 'Dr. Fish'? Are there drinks that are fish flavoured? Are there fish bits in the drinks? Or maybe, there are those insulated cups with baby fish between the water and your lips? Or better yet, Dr. Fish is like Dr. Worm. He's not a doctor, but he's a fish and he likes jamming out on his guitar. Nope, not quite.

Think of it like this, there is a lot of excess skin on your legs. You've nursed a hot chocolate after coming in from the cold, your body is dry and flaky due to the dry cold weather of Korea. Pay an additional 2,000 won to sit with your feet in a thin mote of lukewarm water with hungry flesh eating fishies. It's not as painful as it sounds, in fact it's pretty difficult to stay immobile with two dozen or more small suckling fish. Don't move, folks, you'll scare the carnivores away! No yowling, crying, squealing, squeaking, screeching, singing, sighing, bleating, or whatever it is you do when someone tickles you. Sit back and enjoy a very theraputic foot treatment in Gangnam near exit 6. If you're willing, there's a larger Dr. Fish mineral hot springs in Incheon.

China in Five Days

I visited China during mid-February for five days, with three other people; two Aussies and one American. Three days in Beijing, one in Nanjing and one in Shanghai. The trip from Korea was a little less than two hours, getting through customs was a jiff. The Forbidden City Hostel (right next to Tian'anmen square) picked us up right from Beijing Airport. We checked in, dropped our stuff off, and squared away tour tickets for the following day. We visited Tian-anmen Square, The Great Hall of the People, The Forbidden City, and Belhai park. Then, we went on a night tour: Beijing Olympic Stadium and a bubble wrap building, the wall surrounding Beijing Train station, Beijing Opera House and Parliament building, Houhai shopping area.

Day 2:

We were picked up for our tour, which took quite a bit of time to get to. First, we visited a small portion of the Ming Tombs (previously inhabited by two empress and one emperor). We stopped at a jewelry shop specializing in jade. We were told the way to tell between a fake and a real jade stone (it should be cold to the touch and be cloudy when held up to the light). Next stop, the Great Wall of China. We visited a portion of it that isn't visited often, so there weren't a lot of tourists. There was a large market on a steep hill walking up to the wall, we took a cable car to the actual wall. It was spectacular, even if it wasn't the main route tread by tourists. I firmly believe the best attractions are the ones unknown. We went to a silk museum and learned about the process of silk being made. Lastly, we witnessed a tea ceremony. We met up with a friend and then had dinner. Next post after this one will be a long post of foodie pictures.

Day 3: Beijing to Nanjing

This day was my curse, but a blessing in disguise as well (more so for other people). First stop this fine morning was the Summer Palace, much larger than Tian'anmen Square. It was a task getting up, and then the supposed easier portion of getting down again. I sprained my ankle stepping down a foot high step and rolling on my ankle. The rest of the day I was limping and holding on to arms. It was a painful day, but it was short. Afterward, we visited Beijing Zoo where I saw my first panda, but we soon realized that our train for Nanjing left at 4:23, due to my injury (I wanted to go back to the hostel to rest awhile) and we barely made our 16 hour train. Phew.

Day 4:

16 hours later, we're being picked up for our day tour in Nanjing (leaving us able to forgo accommodations in Nanjing. Later, we would catch our short 3-hour train to Shanghai and check in to our hotel. In Nanjing, first was Dr. Sun Yat Sen mausoleum, I couldn't climb to the top but it was quite picturesque. Then we visited the Confucius Temple which was covered in festive lanterns for the New Year. We went down an area for animals that were cruelly treated to small, cramped cages. It was neat to look, but I felt bad for all those puppies, kitties, birds, fish, etc. The tour guide took us to a small wall where people in Nanjing defended their territory. Lastly, we visited the Nanjing Massacre sight where 30,000 people died when Japan attempted to invade China.

Day 5: Shanghai

We only had one day in Shanghai, so we headed out early and with intent to see everything. We took a taxi to Yuyuan Garden (a shopping area as well) where we ate the most delicious breakfast of dumplings in the whole wide world. Explored there for a while, then to The Imperial Pearl Tower, up to the third 'atmosphere'. On the way down we got separated, which was pretty stressful. Last, we wandered down Nanjing road for a while. We left at 2pm to get to our flight on time. I arrived home too late to catch the bus, so I had to fork out 60,000 won (I split fair with another person). I hope you enjoyed my pictures! ^^

The Department of State has issued this Worldwide Caution to update information on the continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against U.S. citizens and interests throughout the world. U.S. citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness. This replaces the Worldwide Caution dated July 29, 2009, to provide updated information on security threats and terrorist activities worldwide.

The Department of State remains concerned about the continued threat of terrorist attacks, demonstrations, and other violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests overseas. Americans are reminded that demonstrations and rioting can occur with little or no warning. Current information suggests that al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks against U.S. interests in multiple regions, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. These attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics including suicide operations, assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings, and bombings. The following incidents illustrate the continuing desire of extremists to strike American targets and perceived interests: On January 25, terrorists exploded a bomb outside three major hotels favored by Western journalists in the center of Baghdad, killing at least 37 and wounding more than 100; on October 5, 2009, five people were killed and about 10 were injured, includ
ing one U.S. citizen, by a bombing near the offices of the United Nations World Food Program in Islamabad, Pakistan; on August 15, 2009, a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated near the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Headquarters, not far from the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, killing at least seven people and injuring nearly 90 more.

Extremists may elect to use conventional or non-conventional weapons, and target both official and private interests. Examples of such targets include high-profile sporting events, residential areas, business offices, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, public areas, and locales where Americans gather in large numbers, including during holidays. On January 1, 2010, a suicide bomber attacked spectators at a volleyball game in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan. The attack killed at least 95 people. On December 28, 2009, a suicide bomber attacked a Shiite religious procession in Karachi, killing at least 22 people and injuring more than 60. On October 28, 2009, a UN guest house in Kabul was attacked, killing five UN workers, including one American. On the same day, two rockets struck the foreigner-frequented Serena Hotel and the President Palace, also in central Kabul city.

Americans are reminded of the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems. On December 25, 2009, a Nigerian national attempted to detonate a bomb on board a U.S. airliner landing in Detroit; Yemen-based al-Qa’ida affiliates claimed responsibility for the incident. Police officers arrested a man with explosives at the New Delhi Railway station in New Delhi, India on August 25, 2009; and suspected Maoist rebels detonated several explosives at the railway station in Orissa, India on the same day. Other incidents include multiple anti-personnel mine detonations on passenger buses in June 2008 in Sri Lanka, multiple terrorist attacks on trains in India in 2006, the July 2005 London Underground bombings, and the March 2004 train attacks in Madrid. Extremists also may select aviation and maritime services as possible targets, such as the August 2006 plot against aircraft in London, or the December 2006 bomb at Madrid's Barajas International Airport. In June
2007, a vehicle was driven into the main terminal at Glasgow International Airport and burst into flames, but the bomb failed to detonate.

The Middle East and North Africa

Credible information indicates terrorist groups seek to continue attacks against U.S. interests in the Middle East and North Africa. Terrorist actions may include bombings, hijackings, hostage taking, kidnappings, and assassinations. While conventional weapons such as explosive devices are a more immediate threat in many areas, use of non-conventional weapons, including chemical or biological agents, must be considered a possible threat. Terrorists do not distinguish between official and civilian targets. Increased security at official U.S. facilities has led terrorists and their sympathizers to seek softer targets such as public transportation, residential areas, and public areas where people congregate, including restaurants, hotels, clubs, and shopping areas.

Countries in the region continue to experience varying levels of violence. On December 8, 2009, Iraqi government buildings in Baghdad were targeted by car bombs. On October 25, 2009, two massive car bombs exploded outside Iraqi government buildings in a heavily secured area of Baghdad, killing more than 150 people and injuring 500 more; prior to that, on August 19, a series of car bombs and mortar attacks occurred in Baghdad, killing at least 77 people and injuring nearly 500. On August 28, 2009, al-Qaida operatives were involved in a suicide bombing in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia that injured the Saudi Assistant Minister of Security. These events underscore the intent of terrorist entities to continue to target a variety of facilities in the region, including those belonging to local governments and/or where Westerners may be present.

Potential targets are not limited to those companies or establishments with overt U.S. ties. For instance, terrorists may target movie theaters, liquor stores, bars, casinos, or any similar type of establishment, regardless of whether they are owned and operated by host country nationals. Due to varying degrees of security at all such locations, Americans should be particularly vigilant when visiting these establishments.

The violence in Iraq and conflict between Palestinians and Israelis has the potential to produce demonstrations and unrest throughout the region. The armed conflict between Israeli forces and Hamas in Gaza in December 2008 and January 2009 raised tensions and sparked demonstrations throughout the world. The Department of State continues to warn of the possibility for violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests in the region. Anti-American violence could include possible terrorist actions against aviation, ground transportation, and maritime interests, specifically in the Middle East, including the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, the Arabian Peninsula, and North Africa.

The Department is concerned that extremists may be planning to carry out attacks against Westerners and oil workers on the Arabian Peninsula. Armed attacks targeting foreign nationals in Saudi Arabia that resulted in many deaths and injuries, including U.S. citizens, appear to have been preceded by extensive surveillance. On February 22, 2009, there was a bomb attack targeting a popular tourist destination in Cairo, Egypt's Old City. Tourist destinations in Egypt frequented by Westerners were also attacked in April 2006 resulting in many deaths and injuries, including Americans. Extremists may be surveilling Westerners, particularly at hotels, housing areas, and rental car facilities. Potential targets may include U.S. contractors, particularly those related to military interests. Financial or economic venues of value also could be considered as possible targets; the failed attack on the Abqaiq oil processing facility in Saudi Arabia in late

February 2006 and the September 2006 attack on oil facilities in Yemen East Africa

A number of al-Qaida operatives and other extremists are believed to be operating in and around East Africa. Americans considering travel to the region and those already there should review their plans carefully, remain vigilant with regard to their personal security, and exercise caution. Terrorist actions may include suicide operations, bombings, kidnappings, or targeting maritime vessels. Terrorists do not distinguish between official and civilian targets. Increased security at official U.S. facilities has led terrorists to seek softer targets such as hotels, beach resorts, prominent public places, and landmarks. In particular, terrorists and likeminded extremists may target international aid workers, civil aviation, and seaports in various locations throughout East Africa, especially in Somalia. On December 3, 2009, a suicide bomber killed 22 civilians, including three Somalia Transitional Federal Government ministers, during a graduation ceremony for a local univer
sity. On September 17, 2009, terrorists launched coordinated suicide-bomb attacks against an African Union peacekeeping base, involving two car bombs against local and international targets. On July 17, 2009, three NGO workers were kidnapped by unidentified gunmen from their base in Mandera, Kenya, located on the border with Somalia. Americans in remote areas or border regions where military or police authority is limited or non-existent could also become targets.

Americans considering travel by sea near the Horn of Africa or in the southern Red Sea should exercise extreme caution, as there has been a notable increase in armed attacks, robberies, and kidnappings for ransom at sea by pirates in recent months. Merchant vessels continue to be hijacked in Somali territorial waters, while others have been hijacked as far as 1,000 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia, Yemen, and Kenya in international waters.

The U.S. government maritime authorities advise mariners to avoid the port of Mogadishu, and to remain at least 200 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia. In addition, when transiting around the Horn of Africa or in the Red Sea, it is strongly recommended that vessels travel in convoys, and maintain good communications contact at all times. Americans traveling on commercial passenger vessels should consult with the shipping or cruise ship company regarding precautions that will be taken to avoid hijacking incidents. Commercial vessels should review the Department of Transportation Maritime Administration's suggested piracy countermeasures for vessels transiting the Gulf of Aden.

West Africa

The terrorist group, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), has become increasingly active in the West African countries of Mali, Mauritania, and Niger, as well as in parts of North Africa. AQIM uses regions of these countries as safe havens and platforms from which to conduct operations. Formerly known as GSPC (Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat), AQIM has been designated a terrorist organization by both the United States and the European Union. On November 14, 2009, heavily armed individuals attempted to kidnap U.S. Embassy employees in Niger. On August 8, 2009, a suicide bombing near the French Embassy in Mauritania injured two French national guards and one Mauritanian citizen. On June 23, 2009, gunmen murdered an American citizen in Nouakchott.

AQIM has declared its intention to attack Western interests and targets. AQIM is known to operate particularly in the northern region of Mali, within Mauritania, and along the border shared between Niger and Mali. In addition to being a threat to Westerners, AQIM contributes to civil unrest and banditry, which reinforce longstanding security concerns in West Africa. U.S. citizens are urged to avoid travel to these areas without an official escort. U.S. government personnel are required to obtain advance written approval to travel to these areas.

South and Central Asia

The U.S. government continues to receive information that terrorist groups in South and Central Asia may be planning attacks in the region, possibly against U.S. government facilities, American citizens, or American interests. The presence of al-Qaida, Taliban elements, indigenous sectarian groups, and other terror organizations, many of which are on the U.S. Government's list of foreign terror organizations, poses a potential danger to American citizens in the region. Terrorists and their sympathizers have demonstrated their willingness and capability to attack targets where Americans or Westerners are known to congregate or visit. Their actions may include, but are not limited to, vehicle-born explosives, improvised explosive devices, assassinations, carjacking, rocket attacks, assaults or kidnappings.

Since October 2009, terrorists have executed coordinated attacks with multiple operatives using portable weaponry such as guns, grenades, RPGs and suicide vests or car bombs in Pakistan. U.S. citizens have been victims in such attacks. The October 2009 attack on the UN World Food Program in Islamabad injured one U.S. citizen.

On October 15, 2009, a series of attacks occurred throughout Pakistan. Teams of gunmen simultaneously attacked three law enforcement facilities in Lahore, and another bomb exploded outside a residential building used by government employees in Peshawar. These attacks killed at least 26 people and injured another 35. In June 2009, gunmen stormed the Pearl Continental Hotel in Peshawar, Pakistan, and detonated a bomb that resulted in several deaths and scores of injuries. In February 2009, Taliban insurgents conducted a coordinated terrorist attack on three government buildings in Kabul, Afghanistan, which resulted in the death of at least 26 and the wounding of 80 individuals. Between October 2008 and June 2009, several American citizens were kidnapped in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In November 2008, coordinated terrorist attacks on luxury hotels, a Jewish community center, a restaurant, train station, hospital, and other facilities frequented by foreigners in Mumbai, Ind
ia, killed more than 170, including six Americans. In Afghanistan, kidnappings and terrorist attacks on international organizations, international aid workers, and foreign interests continue.

Previous terrorist attacks conducted in Central Asia have involved improvised explosive devices and suicide bombers and have targeted public areas, such as markets, local government facilities, and, in 2004, the U.S. and Israeli Embassies in Uzbekistan. In addition, hostage-takings and skirmishes have occurred near the Uzbek-Tajik-Kyrgyz border areas.

Before You Go

U.S. citizens living or traveling abroad are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department's travel registration web site to obtain updated information on travel and security. This year, it is the year of the metal tiger! I have been celebrating the zodiac with my students, who learned about their zodiacs and the personality analysis associated with it. I also learned, while in Korea, about blood type personalities. It's interesting. Here's a little information about your blood type (which, you should know...):

Type O:
Type O's are outgoing, and very social. They are initiators, although they don't always finish what they start. Creative and popular, they love to be the center of attention and appear very self confident.

Type A:
While outwardly calm, they have such high standards (perfectionists) that they tend to be balls of nerves on the inside. Type A's are the most artistic of the blood groups. They can be shy, are conscientious, trustworthy, and sensitive.

Type B:
Goal oriented and strong minded, type B's will start a task and continue it until completed, and completed well. Type B's are the individualists of the blood group categories and find their own way in life.

Recently, upon hearing of his existence in Seoul, I have wanted to meet the man. I was celebrating a friend's Birthday at a movie theater in Insadong when we came across him. I was extremely enthusiastic, as I've wanted a glider for years. I think he sensed that, so he put one of his little'uns on my jacket. It was fun, and as a result I purchased a sugar gilder from Good Safari. They are called '슈가글라이더' in Korean. If you live in Korea, and you want one, Good Safari is a good place to pick one up.

Snow in Korea?!?!

As much as you have noticed in your varied parts of the world, the weather is a lot more...moody than it is normally. Mother nature is as she implies. The highs are highers, and lows are lower; it's an abnormality. As a Floridian, my snow encounters are limited to my grade school days in Pennsylvania (I recall one year that a six-foot snowman we'd made was up to his choker in snow).

This has been the heaviest snowfall in Korea since December 22nd of 1969 (*they started recording snowfall in 1937), 25.6 cm. This January, the record was broken by .02 cm: 10 in to 10.2in. Alright, so why is that so important? Koreans are not used to large amounts of snow. They are not equip to dealing with it. As a result, most streets were sludgy and black (the sidewalks and roads are so grimy) and the sidewalks were unsalted and slippery. The snow didn't go away either, the weather never heated up enough and the sun was never quite bright enough. Nearly a month later, I am still slipping down the sidewalks at points. Unfortunately students are usually around to witness. The fact that I'm clutzy combined with icy slick sidewalks... results in a foreigner native teacher that more often than not, kisses the dirty Korean pavement. Waffles in Gwanghwamun

I went out on Saturday with some teachers from my school, to Gwanghwamun. which is well known for waffle shops. There were many, but we hit up Coffee Bin Bean for a combination and cranberry waffle. I also ordered hot chocolate generously layered with whipped cream and a gingerbread shaped sugar cookie.
Believe me, it was delicious. They also had many Italian restaurants if one is so inclined to indulge in pasta dishes. There is a giant palace near this location called Gyeongbokgung Palace. I plan on visiting there with my best friend when she comes to see me.
I apologize for the lack of updates, Korea is an experience that has kept me increasingly busy. I am going to visit China in a month, so I will post weekly and then share with you my vacation in Beijing and Shanghai.

Normally, the consonant ‘P’ is ‘ㅍ’, but it’s a strong sounding ‘b’/’p’ sound, so they say ‘ㅃ’.

ㄹ- is actually ‘l’ but in the middle of a sentence, it becomes ‘r’. It’s a day commercially pushed, somewhat like Valentine’s Day in the states. This is from what I could tell. I had no idea the holiday was upon me until students started giving me Peppero. I received more than a bit, feeling quite guilty I could not return the favor. It’s a fun holiday, though. Since I missed Halloween, it almost made up for it.

It’s getting cold here, winter is almost here. A few short weeks and it will be at my door. ALAS! I am armed with heat pads that last 24 hours; they cost roughly 500 – 1000 won. I tuck heating pads into my waist band mid-back and it warms my whole body. I plan on sending some home to my friends and my folks in the states.

I’m also sick again, so bed rest is on the agenda for this night. It is too easy to catch a cold in Korea.

I'm teaching 22 hours a week with an additional extracurricular class and an adult teacher's class I start next Tuesday. I go to Taekwondo Mon-Thursday in Banghak. Since it's become easier to make lesson plans, I have much more free time. I'm learning Korean steadily from my Co teacher. I've learned how to read but it's just words and sounds until I know what pictures they match up with. Thankfully I can now read a subway map. Learning how to read is actually very easy and I can write, too. It's thrilling to learn a new language.

I set up online banking with my co teacher, so hopefully it gets easier to do transactions (and I don't have to leave).

Swine flu is a very hot issue in this area. Last week a third of my students were out of school sick with it, and I was required to wear a medicinal mask throughout the week. I have myself suffered from the flu (or swine flu, I hadn't been tested). Either way, I was sick with the flu and I had to work despite that. Work ethic in Korea is hard core, I have never see anything like it.

Fall colors are beautiful, like a picture. Winter starts in December and yesterday it was 27 C outside. SO COLD.

Sauna Room - Dragon Hill

It was an experience, I've never been naked around people I didn't know for an extended amount of time. I walked in, put my shoes away after receiving my locker, clothing, and key for 12,000 won. I went up a floor and reached the changing area and/or locker room. There were many Koreans walking naked, female only. Bottom floor there were many different pools and saunas, I recommend visiting a Jimjibang even if you are uncomfortable walking around naked; you merely change into your given lounging clothing and you're set!

First Korean Hospital Visit and Open Class

Open class was stressful; it is a yearly experience for Native and Korean English teachers. This class was a success and little in the way of criticism was given. I spent hours working on Photoshop and coming up with ideas, my coteacher spent more time lesson planning. I willingly donated a Saturday to help with this class.
Lesson: 45 mins 5^th grade (20 teachers attended)

Introduction: Ask the class basic conversational questions, introduce the day’s activities.
Let’s Read – PowerPoint introducing present continuous
Let’s Write – Write and answer sentences about present continuous pictures.
Let’s Play – Puzzle game: Each team is given an envelope with puzzle pieces of a picture used in the PowerPoint. Matching game: 31 students took pictures and were Photoshopped onto tiny cartoon images used in both ‘let’s read’ exercise and ‘let’s write’ exercise. The goal was to know the words and match them with the actions:
Dancing – Find a picture of someone dancing and put the card underneath.
Expression – I’m begging you (idioms used often in America).
Review and end lesson.

After class it is followed by refreshments and insight into the lesson.

As long as you work hard and honestly want to teach students, this should be easier than you think. Teachers, all of them, have been there and are sympathetic. They usually want only to give advice and help you.

Cold in Korea:

As a new resident of South Korea I have been introduced to a variety of new things.
1. Cramped transportation and much interaction with commuters
2. Many people cramped into one area all the time
3. People who are used to sharing food and illnesses (oftentimes I’ve noticed many do not cover their mouths when they cough, I cringe daily).
4. New weather
5. Uniquely evolved viruses, different from what I encountered in the USA.

Thus, I find that I am exceptionally sick. I have not been so sick in years and I’ve only been in S.Korea two months. Alas, the health system is beautiful! I simply walk across the street to a small clinic; I’m in and out in 10 minutes after being examined and given a prescription. On top of that, my total medical bill was a grand total of roughly $4.00. Medicine? $3.00.

I’d be more than willing to say that USA needs to severely revamp its healthcare system. Obama is on the right track.

Uijeonbu-Cultural Festival

Again, here I am!

It's the day before open class, so be on the lookout for another blog post about how those run and what kind of feedback I received. Up to today, I've been getting slowly more and more accustomed to life here in Korea. I eat all my kimchi, I use chopsticks well, and I know what level my students are at so I can use words that they know and/or don't know.

Last Friday I attended a cultural festival. My school had a booth where you painted lucky masks and answered questions in English, pretty basic but fun. I had a few people shy away from me since I was speaking English and they don't have any confidence in their speaking ability. My teacher and another school teacher dressed me up in traditional clothing (which they don't seem to know the name of, but I will post a picture) and go around telling kids to go to our booth and paint a Korean mask. It was fun, there was a lot of cultural dancing going on and both young and old attended.

Lotteworld and Open class

Majorly busy, as usual. I think there are a few things I should mention for those thinking about teaching in another country.

You have one-two open classes; open classes that are used as a way to show off your teaching ability, not the actual status of the classroom. It puts more pressure on the Korean teacher, than the English teacher. It’s still pretty stressful for the Native teacher, as well. Its purpose is to allow other teachers to see how the classroom is managed and learn from the experience. Though, in all honesty, it doesn’t really help. I received more help from viewing an actual class (no fireworks, no paperwork) than I did from any open class.

I’m a little stressed, I’ve only been here a month and in two weeks I’ll have to teach in an open class. Yikes. There are two types of open classes: Mentoring and one open class. Mentoring is the entire day, and less planning.

Now that I’ve been here a month, I know how to use the subway pretty easily. Luckily it’s both in English and Korean, and there’s an English voice in case you find the station names hard to decipher. I really enjoyed the Lotte Department store in Nowon, it’s more expensive but it has many different American brands and a movie theater on top. I transfer from the Line 1 to Line 7; it takes about an hour; 30-mins by bus and then 30-45 minutes by subway.

I visited Lotteworld yesterday; some of the foreign teachers I’d met invited me to go. It was a lot of fun. Given my extensive experience with amusement parks (living a little over an hour away from Orlando), it was quite good. I enjoyed the Atlantis ride; it was probably one of my favorite rides. We went on (in no particular order) The Adventures of Sinbad, The Conquistador, The French Revolution, Jungle Adventure, Pharaoh’s Fury, Atlantis, and Gyro Swing. I had to avoid the Gyro Swing and the Conquistador due to my motion sickness, but one of the other teachers and I wandered around taking memorable photos and eating ice cream while we waited for our companions. Most people wandered around with various animal ears on their head; other native teachers wore lamb ears, cat ears, and I wore cow ears. It was fun, but I’d like to see Everland and Seoul land next. :]

I think, at this point it is long overdo to have a blog post.

I have becoming steadily acquainted with the Korean way of life. I find myself frustrated that I can't read where the bus is going, or that I don't know what my co-teachers are talking about in our office room; heck, I even cried last weekend when I couldn't call and order a simple pizza. These days have been met with high stress, hard, draining work, and keyboard pillows. Yes, keyboard pillows. Someone needs to invent a comfortable one; I think they would make a lot of won. My weekends have been made up of lesson planning, and catching up with my loved ones back home. The time difference is so difficult, I am asleep when everyone is awake and vice versa. I'm still having difficulties with Eastern Toilets, and even Kim chi (let's be honest, fermented veggies? REALLY hot sauce? Ouch). I wanted to like it, I really did, but I do not. Staple foods are supposed to be delicious; if their staple food was waffle stand waffles I could eat them every day.

I'm getting better at teaching, though I am still not that great, in my opinion. I am learning what it takes to be a good teacher, I need a break since I've only been here a month (here a month?!!?). My extra class is going OK. I am having them make their own fossils Friday. I need to find ideas of what to use as fossil makers, or ask that they make their own with examples. Luckily, I have no extra class on Wednesdays so I can relax a little.

Haem Haem is getting used to me; he is still pretty skittish but he makes contented noises when I hold him. I was never really ...attracted to guinea pigs as pets, but it turns out they are quite good companions.

I recently found a post office 'somewhat’ near me. One of my co-teachers attempted to give me directions, but I knew it was going to be difficult. A nice Korean woman named Nal stopped and actually took me (by bus) to my destination. This was exceedingly nice and I don't know of anyone who would have done that for me in America. I mailed my packages and then I bought a waffle sandwich from a nearby vender. The waffle was full of honey, bananas, strawberry cream, and chocolate. Even though afterward I got on the wrong bus, I was still more than happy nibbling on my treat. The walk home was quick; walking is always easier on my heart in more ways than one.

ARC, Bank, Ice Cream

I recently received my Alien Registration Card – My health check and ARC application was received and processed. I had the card mailed to the school since it was faster and cheaper than picking it up at the immigration office (that doesn’t make any sense to me…). My co-teacher and I went to Woori Bank; I love the name of the bank, because money is a cause to worry about. It took roughly 45 minutes to set up my account; I definitely needed my co-teacher around to help with the paperwork. Afterwards, we headed to an electronics store in search of a new laptop for myself. Unfortunately this laptop is blue-screening my on a daily basis, it’s almost a grandfather in the age of laptops and time to retire. It has served me well in an obscured life.

I did not find a laptop at this electronics store, the prices were, on average, one million won which is a little too expensive at this point. I think I am going to put money away and save up for a laptop gradually, as a person should do rather than burn a hole in the pocket. At said electronics store I purchased a phone, the Ice Cream phone by Cyon. It is the first smart phone I have ever had and I am amazed by it. I paid a whole 50,000 won for it. It’s pink, it lights up on the front screen with a ‘-___-;’ (my setting, I like that face). I takes photos, I can have webcam chats with people who have phones with the option (it is common), I can look at a subway map in Korean, learn about the weather; use a Korean to English dictionary, etc. It is too useful and I wish American cell phones were even half as good and priced at a good rate.

I would like to write a very long entry, but I am working so hard and I’m so busy that it’s hard to sit down and write about all my experiences, let alone remember them all. The dinner with the teachers was nice; I think they want to spend more time with me. I spent Sunday with my Co-teacher; she was showing me around all the traditional and unique places in and around Seoul. We went to Isa-dong, which is a little marketplace and this wind-around mall (the main one, it’s very popular) with no ramps. We also visited Nansangol Hanok Village, a place that moved ancient houses into one area (famous houses inhabited by various famous and royal people). We met up with some foreign teachers and co-teacher’s husband and saw Seoul Tower, as well. I really enjoyed the lover’s locks; I think it would be fun to do one. Lastly we visited Myeong-dong, which is a very busy shopping area. Perhaps the most busy areas of Seoul, especially at night. I would like to go back and shop soon. I was so tired when I returned home. All day we used buses, subways, and taxis. Today, I went to get my health documents and then went to the Korean Immigration office to get my Alien Registration Card. Afterwards I ate at Lotteria and bought mozzarella sticks and a tornado ice cream. I am very tired, so I am going to try to make this post short. I observed 6^th grader and 4^th grader classes today; I worked on a lesson plan for the 5^th graders in my downtime. I wrote some letters, finished making prize coupons, and had tea-time with the 4^th grade teachers. They seemed to really enjoy my company though the language barrier is wide; they invited me out to dinner after school tomorrow. The co-English teacher said that I could call her over the weekend and she would meet me in Seoul and show me around. I’m bushed from work but I would really like to, so I will let her know tomorrow. She also asked if I would be willing to work seven hours overtime teaching English, and I told her I would think about that, too. It would be overtime and a lot of hard work but I’m used to working a lot. I also purchased a guinea pig named Haem-haem (햄-햄). I made two trips, because I needed more groceries. I’m sure I looked funny carrying a large cage on my shoulder and a bunch of groceries.

Health Check

I managed to navigate the little bit of the bus system I needed to reach the school. Unfortunately I didn’t know to push a red button so I got off one stop after I had intended. It did allow me to recognize the area after the fact when I was returning from my appointment at the Hospital. I had to miss lunch since I was getting a blood test done, throughout the day I was often light-headed and disoriented.

After classes ended I helped some 6th graders with their English speech (it’s an English contest, their English was pretty fluent) before the co-teacher escorted me to the Hospital. I had blood taken, chest x-rays, weight/height checked, teeth checked, and I had to pee in a cup. Now, this is where things got difficult. The bathrooms are floor urinals in public places; that is to say a girl needs to squat to pee. They think this is a cleaner way to use to restroom since there is no surface for the skin to touch, I’m not sure if I agree. Getting home was a little tough, I did manage to get to where I needed to be properly. I am going to learn how to read Korean soon.

I hopped off the bus early to go to Lottemart; it’s like a cheaper four/five story Wal-Mart. I bought a bunch of things I needed for my apartment and ate dinner; a cheeseburger (Word: ch’ijubogo 치즈버거). Lottemart had some animals. TINY guinea pigs, rabbits, hedgehogs, hamsters, fish, etc. I want to buy a guinea pig, though. Any thoughts? I could perhaps pawn the littleun off onto a student after I finish living here.

First Day

I was picked up around 8:15 am because I wasn't yet sure what stop to get off for school and which bus take to school. I made sure to bring my USF flip-flops for shoes to walk around the school in. The bus ride was crowded and jumpy; nobody really cared about bouncing into anyone else. Though on the way home I accidentally stepped on this poor lady's foot, which I promptly excused myself by saying 'mianhamnida' and bowing, since she was my elder. I made it to school and learned to say 'Annyeong' to the students while inclining my head and 'Annyeong haseyo' to elders and coworkers. I received a lot of emphatic 'Hello!'s and 'Hi!'s, some Korean students tried their English skills with me by asking how I was doing. When I entered the school they put a thermometer in my ear to make sure I wasn't sick. I really enjoyed talking with the co-teacher about the culture and traditions of Koreans. She seems pleased that I asked so many questions and was so interested.

First, the principal gave a speech to the teaching staff of Hyoja; there were approximately 50 teachers employed by Hyoja elementary school. I introduced myself and told them in English it would be a pleasure to work with them and bowed. Bow in the beginning, bow in the end. They sang the national Korean Anthem, pledge of allegiance and the school song. Then off to classes. I observed four classes, three fifth grade classes and one fourth grade class. I was so tired by the time lunchtime came. We had kimchi, fried fish, beans of some sort...paste?, miso soup. It was very good, the first hot meal I've had since I've arrived in Korea. I couldn't get a check up today since I had eaten six hours prior to the appointment :<. Rats.

For two hours I read the student guide to understand what to plan for the next lesson. They threw a party for dinner, so we all met up at 4:20 pm at this restaurant specializes in duck dishes. I am going to try my hardest to learn traditions, customs, and try new foods.

You accept/pour drinks with two hands to be polite or to an elder.
You drink to the left or right when dining with an elder.
You never point your chop stick at someone, you never point.
You always bow and say 'annyeong hi gaseyo' when leaving, to each individual person.
Try to try a little bit of everything, though you don't have to eat any more than one bite.

The dinner was splendid. I received two little containers of alcohol, some type of fruit kin to strawberries, as I was told. I'm very happy that I am here teaching.

Hello, Hyoja!

I was getting antsy, this past week. Mostly I opted to stay inside and learn as much Koreans as I could. I haven’t really spoken or touched anyone in a while, so the connection was nice. I hopped on the bus with my Co-English Teacher and saw a bunch of places to eat/shop at. I didn’t pull out my camera so pictures in this post are past pictures. Pizza is very popular around here, as I’ve found out. I am going to learn how to say “May I please buy a cheese pizza”, but for today the word is pizza. [Pizza: p'ija (n); 피자)

The teachers were very friendly, though it’s hard to remember everyone’s names…The kids don’t know much English, but the best way to learn is to hear someone speak it. I don’t expect them to understand much of what I say in the beginning, but as you hear someone use words around you, you begin to pick things up. I talked to the principal; his accent was so heavy it was difficult to understand what he was saying. I enjoyed seeing where I’m to teach, in an ‘English Only’ zone (which apparently nobody follows the rules…).

Tomorrow I use my new bus pass and travel to class and from 8:30 until 5:00 I’ll be observing class :]. Then I am going to go grocery shopping at LotteMart; I desperately need trash bags and conventional food. For the record, Koreans really take care of you /hugs curtains.

Random Fact: Koreans oftentimes put corn on their pizza as a topping; they love putting many odd varieties of things on their pizza.

Today, I dare to be mundane. Depending on my area where I lived in the United States, I would receive coupons and brochures on my doors and mailboxes; people trying to sell me goods or services. Admittedly, it worked more often than not. I’ve been the victim of door-to-door salesmanship. Their ideas for pizza are similar though unique, and I wish I could order in and be lazy. Instead I had some sort of curry meal whilst Skype-chatting with loved ones from afar.

Internet Laws

There are many a laws that I've come to find, much of which I don't agree with. While Korea is one of the most technologically sophisticated countries out there, their Internet is monitored. Real names and addresses are attached to IP addresses. As a way to combat the lack of privacy Google has blocked access to both foreigners residing in Seoul and native Koreans who wish to post any sort of content or comment on videos. For more information please visit this article. With this knowledge, know that sites with adult content and pornography are illegal, as well. Censorship is not enough. My feelings on this? Good in some cases, not in others.

I managed to get out a little today, though I got quite a few stares as a foreigner who kept whipping her camera out taking photos. I had one man outright stare at me for at least 30 seconds before I waved my hands apologetically and said 'annyeong haseyo' :[. That was alright, I got some pretty fantastic shots going down one way down a few blocks. I also found some more convenience stores with more of a selection. I found a Shin-chan drink. There were cell phone shops, grocery stores, veggy stores, motorcycle/moped stores, Hair Salons, Nail Salons, etc. I found what seems to be a bus line, but I'm still exploring (and only in one direction). There are MANY Internet Cafes.

I’m currently waiting for my water to heat up so I can take a shower. I’ll break periodically through the journal to do productive things. I just want to say this before I forget...Google is very annoying when in another country. They like to assume you speak the language of the area you reside so all my language is converted to Hangul. Continuing on.

I finally ventured out to gather food. I purchased lots of junk food: cookies and cream chocolate, vanilla flavored wafers, fruit juice 주스, two packets of delicious ramen (with dried veggies inside!), shampoo. Before I left I translated everything into Korean and even wrote it down in Hangul. The little market near my apartment isn’t too big so I couldn’t locate a lot of the food on my list that I’d gathered after asking my question here. I’m not sure if the dog meat advice with intended to be serious or not.

I’ve finished getting Rosetta Stone set up to start learning Korean. I think I respond better when I can see the words rather than the images, but I shall try learning this way first.

I meant to take pictures outside while I was grocery shopping but I only managed to take a few videos of the inside of my pocket. I was nervous, needless to say. I feel accomplished and more willing to venture out into the foreign terrain, now that I’ve managed to buy some food stuff. I spent approximately ₩15,430 and $12.37 in USD.

To deal with the time difference I knitted a eye mask (though I don't know the proper name for it, so comment if you can to let me know). I used small needles for a closer knit and vouched for a black worsened yarn. I'm glad I learned how to knit before I left, one of my goals is to find a craft store soon.

First Day in Korea

I’ve finally made it to Korea, after many months. I knew there was going to be a horrible cultural shock, and here it is. I am thinking up things to do to branch between my comfort zone and Korean culture. My flight here was nerve-wracking between three different airports and roughly 18-hours plane time, not including layovers. Customs was a jiff, immigration simply a stamp and a pat on the head, I was told before leaving the aircraft that I could pick up my baggage at #13 baggage claim. The USA checks all bags in International flights to protect those flying, so my things were left alone when I made it to customs, since I had no firearms or other such things to declare. I converted $100.00 to 120,000 won.

I was picked up at the airport by some of the kind people who work for Hands Korea. I mentally berated myself when I accepted a caramel mocha-chino with one hand, making note to do it properly next time. I think they’re used to Westerners as they pick up ten or so teachers a week, so I hope I wasn’t terribly insulting. Incheon Airport was easy to navigate and as I’ve noticed a lot of things are in English, also. Not all things, since my surrounding area tends to be in Korean.

My bags were quickly packed away and I was escorted north-east around Seoul to Uijeonbu. We walked around the neighborhood; my questions came out in a torrent of breath to the amusement of the two Hands Korea employees.

• Where is the subway?

• Where can I get a phone?

• Where do I go to get a checkup?

• Where do I go to get my alien registration card?

• Where can I print stuff out?

• Where can I set my bank account up?

• Where's the school?

• Where is a bigger market?

I was told to hold my questions for the Korean-English teacher I’m to meet with tomorrow since she is unable to meet with me today.

There is a convenience store in the same building, open 24/7. Across the street is a small supermarket. There are two 24/7 internet cafes within a few blocks of my apartment, one charges 1,000 won per hour while the other I haven’t visited yet, the closer one. At this point in time there is one USD for every 1,250 KRW. Internet is less than a dollar. It’ll be better when I’m simply able to use Won rather than converted USD.

There were at many places that served chicken in various styles and dishes; three notable, one that specialized in Korean BBQ and the other two fried chicken (I was told it’s like KFC) and baked chicken. There’s a bedding shop nearby, I’d like to look for sheets and a mattress topper for this bed that I was kindly allowed. My view is spectacular. I have two wide windows, though I would like blinds to cover them for days on the weekend when I’d like to sleep in. I see mountains surrounding my apartment and all the little shops adjacent to the complex.

There’s a bakery, as well, and I intend to invade when I’m out to practice my Korean.

It is now completed!!! I had to drive up to Georgia for a few days for the interviewing process. They asked me basic questions:

etc. I'm leaving tomorrow at 6am for a 20 hour flight. Ugh.

They are having a few issues with my Visa but they went ahead and booked my flight to Korea for August 23rd. It was pushed back a little as a result, but that's okay with me. I'm not going to have a home internet connection for 3-4 weeks. I'll have Internet Cafes and the school to connect, but not at home. At least I'll have incentive to get out and explore (cause I don't know the language as well as I'd like...)

I sent in all the paperwork to GEPIK and they are currently processing it so I can get my work Visa. I went to AAA to obtain a International Driving Permit should I choose to purchase a car (especially if I decide I want to resign and stay an additional year). I bought a new piece of luggage, 29 inch, four wheel roller. I now need a cat carrier for Expresso and a few things to go with that...I can't believe I am leaving in four weeks. I am running on petrified optimism.

I have found my perfect school through Reach to Teach/Hands for Korea. I was deciding between two very nice schools that already had contracts ready for me to sign (sign my life away!) but I have chosen Hyoja Public Elementary School through EPIK. I decided to work for a public school, it is the safest route for someone who does not know much about Korean culture nor the language. I am studying Korean steadily, I was provided an invaluable source for learning the language through Hands for Korea, I highly suggest the utilization of this website if you ever decide to a. visit South Korea or b. learn a new language. Learn Korean!

I will be leaving Mid-August, one of the reasons I decided to work for a Public school rather than leaving immediately for a Private. I wanted more time to spend with family and friends before moving to a new destination.

As for my paperwork, I am only waiting on my degree from USF and I am set. I am in the process of moving my material possessions to my parent's house and transferring to another country.

I've researched various teaching programs in South Korea and have found these two following options that best suit my intent.

Reach to Teach
Aclipse

These programs vary and have promising individual qualities but at this moment I am most impressed by Reach to Teach, also known as 'Hands Korea'. It's composed of a small group of people who have convinced me that I would prosper best in their program. They have given me vital information I need to know in order to begin teaching outside Seoul. I have an interview with the headmaster of a school which I pray goes well. The school is in a satelitte city, Goyang. To be honest I believe I'll get the position (so much for not counting your eggs before they hatch). Having a Bachelor's in English helps, I'd wager.

I need to submit the following:

For an E2 Visa
1. Criminal Records from FBI - (one month)
2. College Diploma (four-six weeks)
3. Two sealed transcripts
4. Four passport photos

I've applied two more programs to work in S.Korea with high hopes. As my current job draws to a close I scramble to find supplement income to 1) help with living in Korea for the first month 2) to live off of while I wait until moving to Korea.

Welcome To: Hello Hyoja!
Welcome to my blog. I'll skip the name introduction as you can plainly see my name and very basic information about me. I've made the decision to leave my countryship and travel the world. I'm tired of a dried up economy and of jumping through hoops to find a job. I choose South Korea.

I admit I don't know much about South Korean culture except that you accept objects from people with two hands rather than one. From pictures I've seen of the country I'm impressed. I've always been interested in Asian culture but have never had a worthwhile opportunity to explore it. Except perhaps the time of my life where I watched Anime religiously and attended Asian conventions on a regular basis. Now that I've completed four years of college I'm ready to *insert cliche metaphor here*. I've been in school for a total of Seventeen years. Needless to say this is a dramatic life change. I know it will be difficult but I need to do this.
